Clandestines, emergency in Vlora

The prefect summons the police commissioner for a report TIRANE- The possible response, after the latest measures taken by the Italian government against trafficking with speedboats, was exactly what had been expected. The trafficking route for clandestines, with the crossing point from Vlora to Italy, has since the early hours of yesterday morning seen an unprecedented influx. Official sources from the Vlora Police report that hundreds of people have headed toward the well-known coastal area near the city with the same aim: crossing to the Italian shores by speedboat. The situation, at a time when in Italy on the coasts of Puglia strict control measures have been taken in order to curb clandestine trafficking, is highly problematic in the Vlora district. According to local police sources, the number of people seeking to cross from the Albanian shores to the Italian ones reached around 800 during yesterday. Although some measures were taken as early as yesterday morning to block people attempting to set off by speedboat toward the Italian coasts, their flow appears to have continued without interruption throughout the day. Official sources from the Prefecture of the Vlora district said yesterday that, because of the situation created, the prefect of Vlora, Albert Shyti, had summoned the district police commissioner to a special report. The meeting held in the late hours of the night, according to the same sources, focused on examining the situation created on the Vlora coast. It is still unknown whether this flow of clandestine trafficking will last or not. Sources from Italy report that yesterday at midday, after the arrival of 500 people from the Albanian shores, the Italian police questioned a number of them in an effort to identify the organizers of this trafficking.
